The Story Behind Kinks & Locs

My daughters inspired the name ‘Kinks and Locs’, but my own natural hair journey shaped it with its frustrations, lessons, and triumphs.

In late 2018, after spending an entire morning waiting to have my relaxed hair braided, I made a spontaneous decision that changed everything. I went home and cut it all off. I was ready to embrace my natural hair fully, but I was not yet realising how much I still had to learn.

Going natural felt liberating, but it wasn’t simple. There were long mornings spent detangling, managing shrinkage, and discovering what my texture truly needed. Eventually, I chose to lock my hair. It simplified my routine but introduced a new challenge, LINT.

Lint became a quiet but persistent frustration. Fabrics and unsuitable head wraps left fibres trapped in my locs. After researching natural hair care, one thing became clear: a satin bonnet was essential.

In 2020, just before the pandemic, I turned to my sewing machine. Using skills I had taught myself through YouTube, I created my first satin‑lined bonnet. I shared it online, and the response was immediate. What started as a personal solution quickly became something bigger — a way to help others protect and celebrate their natural hair.

My journey has continued to evolve. While I no longer wear locs, the lessons remain the same: protection matters, function matters, and style matters.
